Windermere Lake Cruises’ popular self-drive boats are available to hire from Lakeside Pier for the first time in the company’s history, following a 3/4 million pound investment.

The nifty little electric boats offer a sustainable way to explore England’s largest lake and can seat up to six people, plus dogs are welcome too.

No experience is necessary to drive one of these comfortable boats, and with a rollback roof, they are great for days out on the lake whatever the weather.

Windermere Lake Cruises has invested in six new boats, all of which are named after female staff and their relatives.

The newest boats will be based out of Bowness pier, meaning that existing boats are available to hire from Lakeside, where there is also a new pier and ticket office. These new facilities mean visitors will have an opportunity to explore the southern part of the Lake for the first time. This area has plenty of attractions and walks which could be combined with a cruise such as West Windermere Way, a walking track which opened in 2024.

The boats can travel at a maximum speed of 3 knots (4mph), allowing ample time to take in this picturesque area.

Self-drive boats are available to hire for durations of one or two hours with prices starting from £44 for one hour based on up to two adults on-board, children travel free of charge. No boating experience is necessary and full instructions, sailing guides and buoyancy aids are provided for all passengers.

Bookings can be made directly from the kiosk at Lakeside (subject to availability) on in-advance online at wlc.co.uk/self-drive-row-boats
