Published: 17th July 2013
One of Windermere’s historic steamers has today, Wednesday 17 July, welcomed two very special visitors; Her Majesty The Queen and Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. MV Teal, the largest steamer ever built for the lake, hosted the two Royal guests on a cruise from Bowness-on-Windermere up the lake to Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Centre. A free bus service linking up a range of visitor destinations across South Lakes is back bigger and better than ever before, thanks to support from the GoLakes Travel programme and a unique collaboration of local businesses. The South Lakes FreeRider has proved popular with visitors and residents over the past two years, and this summer will see the route extended to Grange-over-Sands and Grizedale Forest. That means passengers not only have easier access to the coastal village of Grange and the Cartmel Peninsula, but a range of activities at Grizedale Visitor Centre including mountain biking, Go Ape! and walking trails boasting sixty impressive sculptures to discover across the forest.

A newly launched ‘Bike Boat’ - providing a special ferry service for cyclists across England’s longest lake - will go daily for the school summer holidays. Windermere Lake Cruises has specially adapted a traditional wooden vessel, Sunflower, to carry up to 12 bikes and passengers across the lake and back. Running approximately every 20 minutes, it will act as a ferry service for cyclists travelling between Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Centre, on the eastern side of the lake and Wray, on Windermere’s tranquil western shore.
